Day 19

Day 18

Today in class we took notes. My notes consisted of, " why do you do what you do?, philos- myths- or what we would roughly call the science of story telling, philosofia- the love of wisdom, philosophy-the academic study of anything, plato had a school called the academy, Aristotle had a school called the lyceum, philosophy-  came to be understood asa way of thinking about questions, example: what is the world like?, Is there anything else in the world besides matter and energy, do I have a soul"

Day 17

Today in class we took notes. my notes consisted of, not exactly, but he did dream of having the sum of mankind’s knowledge easily accessed in one location he wrote extensively on such topics as… logic -- physics -- biology ethics -- politics -- rhetoric motion -- theatre -- poetry metaphysics -- psychology -- dreams… and on and on... he also tutored Alexander the Great ·        Aristotle was a student of Plato ·        he helped foster the idea of Athens as an intellectual destination ·        his school - the Lyceum - focused on cooperative research - building on knowledge gathered from all over the world Plato was a student and follower of Socrates he wrote out Socrates’ teachings, and described his trial in Apology Republic was Socrates’ discussion of justice and the ideal state - one of the most influential books on philosophy ever writ...

Day 16

Today in class we took notes. Day 15

Today in class we took notes. My notes consisted of the following, "nike of samothrace-discovered in 1863, the nike (or winged victory) of samothrace was probably created around 203 bc to honor a sea battle. through it exaggerated features and artful portrayal of flowing disparity, the nike conveys a sense of action and triumph. Currently its displayed at the Louvre museum in Paris. " "red and black pottery- greek art also included pottery, which is known for its beauty of form and decoration. two major types of greek pottery are black figure and red figure. the vessel shows a scene from greek mythology. the god zeus, disguised as a bull carries off a young woman named europa. the figures on the plate demonstrate the importance of fish in the greek diet."

Day 14

Today in class we took a test and then took notes. my notes consisted of, " Athenian democracy: Citizens;male, 18 years old, born from parents of citizens" "Laws voted on and proposed directly by assembly of all citizens" "leader chosen by lot" "executive branch composed of a council of 500 men." "juries varied in size" "no attorneys, no appeals, one day trials." "political power exercised by citizens" " three branches of government" " legislative branch passes laws" " executive branch carries out laws" " judicial branch conducts trials with paid jurors."

Day 13

Today in class we took some notes and reviewed what was going to be on our test Friday. Some of the things I wrote down and need to study are, "how would Greeces geography affect its culture?" "the 9 locations to remember on the map of Greece" "The greek diet, grains, grapes, olives, and fish." "when the Mycenaeans dominated Greece from 1600-1100 BCE, they absorbed minoan culture" "The odessey was about odious trying to get home, the Iliad was a book about the trojan war." "Homer was a blind man and he went around from place to place carrying on greek oral tradition by telling stories such as the odyssey and the Iliad." "polis, monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyrant" "Aristocracy and its aristocrats" " Draco, Solon, clythenes, " " citizenship, rich , landowner, from Athens."

Day 12

Today in class we had to start studying for our test Friday. Some of the thing I studied were,  Greece is a mountainous peninsula, mountains cover three-quarters of Greece. Approximately 2000 islands in the Ionian and Aegean Seas. This combination shaped Greece’s culture. They had many skilled sailors and shipbuilders, also farmers, metalworkers, weavers, potters. They had poor / limited natural resources, so they needed to trade. It was difficult to unite the ancient Greeks because of the terrain . They developed small, independent communities (city-states), that’s who they were loyal to. Greek diet consists of grains, grapes, olives & fish. Mycenae is located on a rocky ridge on Peloponnesus,  protected by a 20-foot thick wall. Mycenaean kings dominated Greece from 1600-1100 BCE, controlled trade in the region. 1400 BCE-  Mycenaeans invaded Crete and absorbed Minoan culture (writing system, language, art, politics, literature, religion). round 1200 BCE the mysterio...
